My Spiritual Autobiography I am the only child of older parents. I was born in Plantation Florida. My mother was forty-one years old when I was born, and my father was sixty-one years old. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "My Spiritual Autobiography" essay for you Create order My mother is third generation American also being born in South Florida, where she attended public and Catholic schools. Her ancestry is fifty percent Danish and fifty percent Irish. My father was born and raised in Costa Rica. His ancestry is fifty percent from Spain and fifty percent of the indigenous people of Costa Rica, whose origins are not really known. Both of my parents were raised within the Catholic faith. I have been raised in the Catholic faith, being baptized, receiving first Holy Communion and then participating in the sacrament of Confirmation. We are a middle class working family. We are not wealthy, but we are comfortable. I have never wanted for anything. We have traveled throughout the United States extensively and I used to spend summers with my fathers family in Costa Rica. We currently do not attend mass regularly as we are on twenty-four hour duty to care for my 100 year-old grandmother. My parents take care of her out of love, but it is emotionally stressful and takes a great deal time. They have tried to prevent any impact on me as much as possible, but I am called to help sometimes. As I started this essay, I looked up the definition of spirituality. According to the Oxford online dictionary, the definition is relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. Spirituality is something that will change over your lifetime. As Professor Peter Feldmeier states in his interview U.S. Catholic interview for the article What is spirituality? Building a relationship with God is a life-long process of transformation. The key is first figuring out where your heart lies, the purpose of spirituality is transformation. He also believes if you can define what is most important to you and imagine the world to be, then you on your way to figuring out your spirituality. As Buddha said, just as a candle cannot burn without fire, man cannot live without a spiritual life. Because it is always transforming, there is no beginning and no end. It is constantly changing throughout your lifetime. I believe there will be doubts about your spirituality up until the moment you draw your last breath. That may be the most critical time, and that is when your faith will come into play. What do you believe? How have you behaved based on your beliefs? Are you worthy of salvation? Is there salvation? I agree with this position. I often question my faith and my spirituality. What is important to me changes over time as I learn more about people and the world. I have come to a greater understanding that we are all interconnected as human beings and with Gods other creatures on our planet. As I learn more, my priorities change. Throughout your life, spirituality and faith will guide your behavior, so it is important to always be aware of what you believe and what your priority are so you can act in accordance with both. My current state of spirituality has been shifting greatly the past few years. I was very selfâ€Å"centered and now I am shifting my priorities to family, friends and the community. I believe the change is the result of observing the love and care my parents give my grandmother. In addition, while completing my service hours, I have met so many other people whose situation in life is very difficult and it helped me know how blessed I really am. Often we feel sorry for ourselves, and as much as I do not like to see others suffer, it certainly changes ones perspective! As I continue my journey, I definitely need to talk to others about their spirituality. I also need to read and seek out information so as not to be afraid of any change or transformation. It is easy not to focus on spirituality or faith as by definition they are a belief that you have to somehow convince yourself at each point, it is the right priorities and faith. Then because it is always changing, you are looking for ways to connect the dots, and that is not always easy. Institutional church offers you guidance in determining priorities and explaining or justifying why those should be your priorities, what you should treasure. However, some churches can also provide mixed messages or as institution not have their priorities in the right order. I believe my relationship with God will strengthen in the future. As I mature, I seem to rely more on my faith, my spirituality and what means living a good life. I do not know if there is a heaven, but in a way to provide comfort for why we live, I would like to think there is and I will someday be there with God. If I were to sit with Pope Francis, I would challenge him to somehow reduce some of the rigidity and complexity of the church. I am not suggesting to loosen the definitions of what is sinful, or how we should behave, but rather to allow more full participation by regular people and use technology and more modern tools to communicate with the members. I would also suggest the church spend more time helping the poor, elderly, infirmed and less time on collecting and spending money. On the other hand, one of the Churchs strength is tradition. There are some traditions, like the sacraments which make us all the same, as one in Gods love. If I were ever blessed enough to sit with God, I would want to find out why as humans do we turn on each other the way we do? Why do we have instances of ethnic cleansing? Holocaust? War? Why do we do that? We each value, and when we hurt each other, we are turning our backs on what God has given us. My relationship with God in one word would be loving. I believe God loves all of us and all of creatures on the planet. As the Church teaches, all lives have value and deserve respect. This is the framework of a loving God. The color I see in God is blue. That is the color of the Virgin Mary who gave birth to Jesus. It is also a calm and peaceful color. Top Social Issues Climate change â€Å" Climate change is impacting our lives every day. From sea level rise, to rising temperatures, climate change is impacting plants and animals and is threating human existence. If we do not address it soon, it will become too late.   Divided country and world due to racism and intolerance â€Å" I think the world and our country is becoming more divided and we are less tolerant of one another. Racism is on the rise and people are acting out because of it. If I met God, I would want ask him to help me understand why humans act this way towards each other and how can we fix it? Hunger/Thirst â€Å" Due to climate change and increased draughts, over farming, cutting of our rain forest, water is becoming scarce as are is food, crops, and animals. We also overfish our oceans and unless we find another way to get nutrition, we are threating our future. Homelessness and poverty â€Å" It is hard to see someone on the street, dirty, hungry, tired and many with mental illness. We have so much wealth and technology and yet we cannot seem to solve the poverty and homeless issue.

In today's world, marketing is treated differently. Marketing is not only restricted by selling goods and services. Often managers believe marketing means the distribution of goods, promotion, pricing, and sales but it is not, marketing means how to satisfy customers by fulfilling their needs and wants by providing quality products and services and on the basis of these how the organization can achieve its goals and objectives. The concept of marketing is broadened on the basis of customer requirements.Marketing managers should put customers in central for making decisions. A Review on the Rich and the Rest of Us Free Essays

THE RICH AND THE REST OF US: A POVERTY MANIFESTO By Cornel West and Tavis Smiley â€Å"Our intent with The rich and the rest of us is to make [people] think about the pervasiveness of poverty, its real causation, and the threat it poses to our democracy. We want to raise awareness about poverty and discuss how best to end it- in out lifetime. â€Å"(Excerpted from the introduction, page 10-11) When I started with this book, I had expected it to be a book on how depressing poverty is and maybe how to become rich. We will write a custom essay sample on A Review on the Rich and the Rest of Us or any similar topic only for you Order Now What I came across was none of that but a realistic approach with some new ideas of how to deal with poverty. The authors have explained everything in simple language that is discernable by everyone and no necessarily economists. It is based on the US economy and not poverty all over the world. It deals with the situation of poverty in the US. Recently with the Presidential election campaign, a lot was said about the difference between the middle class and the rich. Especially with the tax cuts issue where tax cuts are being wanted for the middle class and the wealthy shall not be given any cuts. Any household that is earning anything more than $1 million per year should not be paying lesser income tax than what a middle class family does. This book has historical backgrounds, personal stories and statistics to say to us that poverty is not just a big issue but also a national threat along with bringing shame upon USA. It seems that the citizens of America as a whole does not choose to solve this problem. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley are crying out for help to speedily address the growing poverty before it forever distorts the US democracy, values and economic future. The great recession has affected a large number of people who have been forced into poverty and also deepening the poverty that already exists. United States census declares that 50% of all Americans are now in the low income or close to low-income bracket. When the biggest economic institutions fell due to the recession, they went to the Government for help, which was given to them. But, in turn, the majority of Americans suffered. There were no more jobs and place to live. One-third of the American middle class has fallen into poverty. This book is a fast read that encapsulates current issues with the historic past and obvious advocacy. This book shows how every president has handled the problem of poverty and the change of political and popular attitude towards the poor. They also talk about a â€Å"new poor† that has been added to the homeless, food insecurity and unemployment. They use Martin Luther King as a major example who immersed himself in the subject of poverty before his demise. Though, he saw it as an issue that only affected the African-American population. The new poverty is not like the poverty we associate with wrongdoing. This new poverty is the â€Å"working poor† who have jobs and sometimes more than one person in d family is earning. Just they are not being paid enough to sustain themselves and their families. They have no unions to protect their interests, no benefits like medical or retirement and long working hours. There is no surety of jobs and no guarantee so every worker is one salary away from poverty and also one lay off away. Basically Smiley and West has started a War for the poor. They are trying to give a voice to those less fortunate. For them, their ultimate goal is to try and give back the American dream, which has now been down sized and outsourced. They say that during the presidential elections on 2012 both the parties never said the word poor or poverty. Another important aspect of the book is the Occupy movement. It was what marked the state of their inequality in economics and an ongoing change in America’s policies and priorities. Tavis Smiley says in the book â€Å"We wanted people who are struggling in this current economy to know that they are not alone and not forgotten. † It tells us about a imperfect system where there is no economic equality. Even though America is changing into a nation of major minority, it does not have the market unity to ensure success. The poverty manifesto talks about twelve points about what steps to be taken to help the situation. First and foremost fair wages should be given to the people so that they are enough to live on. Then the Government needs to introduce more jobs; the prison and mass incarceration rates need to be looked at, tax codes, fair inflation rates. The most imperative of all is to release a call for a conference at the White House on the abolition of poverty and for that a sample letter must be sent to the President. This book says that USA is in a state of emergency, and that they should stand up and take some action. They need to work towards sustaining solutions and jobs with living wages. Unless they do that, they will not get the status of a great nation back. The efforts have to come from bottom up and will need brave leadership at the top most level to get back America in old form. Politics is run by money, and people with substantial amounts can actually affect the public policy. It is how the democracy of USA was designed and not much has changed since it was founded. The only major difference is that now corporations influence more than individuals now. The power of money is the same no matter whether you are a republican or a democrat. I find that the first part of the book is very good. It gives us a good look into poverty and backing it up by statistics and graphs. West and Smiley delve in deeper and examine the emotions comprised in poverty. I enjoyed the way it is written and how the authors provide us with two different voices. Personally I think that the book lacks where the solutions are concerned. No doubt hay have given some ideas on how to take on the problem but most seems repetitive and doesn’t seem like they are thorough. After reading the book I have a much better understanding of the poverty situation in America. I had heard the presidential debates and the speeches but never really understood the seriousness till I read this book. This book is highly recommended for all those to want to face problems by smart public policy, which would end up getting work for people and also providing the structure and services needed. A new economy can be created that will be supportable and progressive. One that will put the citizens on America back to work, just, the right leadership is needed. Human Resource Management Perspective of Organisation

Question: Describe about the Human Resource Management for Perspective of Organisation. Answer: Introduction Exclusive Foods Pty Ltd is a known retail brand having 17 stores operating in New South Wales, Australia. The company has created a brand image for itself by providing high customer service to the customers. Customers are offered with the finest quality food products along cookware, cookbooks, utensils and wine. However, the statistic data of the company indicates that the employees are dissatisfied with the remuneration and benefit structure that increases the turnover rate. This imposes a threat to the business of Exclusive Foods Pty Ltd and therefore the managers of the company decides to undertake new remuneration benefits in order to deal with the issues of high turnover rate. The new remuneration and benefits initiative helps the company to increase the satisfaction level of the employees that is further beneficial in decreasing the turnover rate of the company. Part 1: Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd employs remuneration strategy in which the employees are paid equally. The employees who have high performance are paid the similar salary package as that of the under-perform employees. The managers need to improve this area, as the employees are de-motivated and dissatisfied by the remuneration structure (Coginand Williamson2014). Moreover, there is less opportunity for the employees to develop their career as the company focuses only on the profit and not on its people. The flexibility is limited and there is no increase in the pay. The employees are not provided clear instruction about their allowance, penalties and leave. These factors create the opportunity for new remuneration and benefit initiatives. The operational expenses of the company are high that acts a hindrance for high remuneration packages (Grahamet al. 2013). The managers of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd needs to allocate the remuneration structure as per the performance of the employees or the company can keep the pay scalesame and offer incentives as per the performance level. The incentive benefits will motivate the employees to improve the productivity of the employees and thus help to retain more employees. The company needs to pay attention towards the employee needs and training opportunities need to be developed (Shieldset al. 2015). The link between the effort of the employees, their performance and the monetary rewards should exist in the company. 2: Plan feature Practice Target level of cash Assessed at a median market of the labour market of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd and gain the authority to set the prices. Salary and IC ratio 70% salary and 30% incentive Incentive plan structure The bonus indicates 80-85% of the target incentives and MBOs indicate 20-15% of the target. Prevalent measures The volume of total sales Profit Sales volume by line of business MBOs Performance 80% chances to achieve the organisational goals of the company Increase the satisfaction level of the employees. 2: The remuneration and the benefit plan of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd is compared with its competitors in order to ensure that the company is able to attract and retain the employees suitable for accepting the challenges of future remuneration and benefits offered by the company (Rees and Smith2014). From the analysis of the salary survey of the competitors of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd, it can be inferred that the companies offer better and attractive salary packages to its employees. The incentives offered to the employees are higher in number that provides job satisfaction to the employees. However, Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd does not offer the employees any such incentives for their performance that can help to increase the motivation level (Brattonand Gold 2012). Furthermore, the organisational policies of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd is almost related to the profit enhancement of the company and pays less concern towards the policies related to the staffs. The two positions withinExclusive Food Pty. Ltd that is chosen are the managers and the employees. The industrial agreement for the managers includes the consultation process, procedures for resolving the disputes and deducting the wages in case of any purpose authorised by an employee (Baconet al. 2013). The industrial agreement of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd includes the wage rates and the employment conditions of the company such as overtime, meal breaks and working hour of the employees. The awards of the company deal with minimum wage rate, annual leave, the hour of work, overtime and casual rates, allowance etcetera (Hendry2012). The market rate survey of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd infers that the company operate offers in a high competitive market. The managers of the company face competition from its rival organisations as the management system of the competitors are more developed from Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd. this causes a threat on the company's performance level. The employees of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd has higher level of competition as the employees in the rival company are more motivated and productive that increases their performance level than that of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd (Zareen, Razzaq and Ramzan 2013). Thus, Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd has the high level of competition in order to gain higher market share. The company needs to provide better remuneration structures to the employees to increase the employee productivity and the performance level of the company as a whole. 3: The remuneration plan of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd is to increase the incentive percentage offered to the employees. The current remuneration process of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd is not effective in providing satisfaction to the employees. Thus, the remuneration plan helps the company to develop better remuneration and benefit structure that helps to satisfy the employees and retain those employees (Young2016). Aligning the remuneration and benefit plan with the performance management system of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd helps to increase the performance and productivity of the company. The managers of the company are able to decide the exact percentile of incentive to be allowed to the employees and adjust the plan according to the need of the company. 2. The salary packaging of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd helps to meet the organisational policy such as ensuring that the workers are not exploited. The salary structure is kept consistent with the long-term strategy of the company. The transparency in terms of the reward strategy of the company is obtained with the help of the remuneration plan of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd (Plc 2013). The incentive arrangement such as the bonus and the promotion of Exclusive Food Pty complies with the organisational policy and the legal requirement of the company as the incentives make the employees feel valued. The operational and the employee benefit cost of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd is reduced with the help of the incentive arrangement. 3. The three pieces of legislation that Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd needs to make in order to make the regular monetary contribution are superannuation, concessional contribution and super guarantee contribution (SGC) threshold. The superannuation policy of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd is designed for the welfare of the employees. The employees make the regular contribution in the fund for the future pension. The fund amount increases typically without the implication of tax until withdrawn or retired. The concessional contribution indicates that the employees of Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd takes before-tax contribution to the fund, which has low tax rate. The super guarantee contribution (SGC) scheme indicates the maximum amount that the employee can contribute to the fund is $4826.75 per quarter. The three methods by which Exclusive Food Pty. Ltd can ensure that the minimum entitlement is offered to the employees are registering to NES, pay rates and leave. The National employment standards (NES) under the fair Work Act 2009, provides minimum entitlements such as flexible working arrangements, maximum weekly hours of work and much more (Oke 2016). The pay rate helps to measure the minimum wage, penalty rates, and overtime etcetera. The employees are entitled to certain limited leaves such as the annual leave, sick leave, public holidays, long service leave, maternity leave and other few leave. 4: The remuneration plan of Exclusive Food Pty can be effective in achieving an effective alignment between the action of the employees and the companys objectives. The managers are able to retain the potential employees of the company and the employees are able to receive a stake in the success of the company. The remuneration plan of Exclusive Food Pty also acts as an effective cost-control mechanism which is an extra benefit (Purce 2014). As per the feedback from the managers, the ratio of the salary and the incentive is changed and made into 60%-40% ratio. Along with the incentive benefits, the introduction of performance-based promotion is made that allows the employees to develop and grow by increasing their performance level. In order to keep a constant track on whether the plan remains aligned with the organisational policy and legal requirement, it is necessary for the managers to receive and give proper feedback to the employees. Conclusion The above study highlights that the new remuneration strategy of Exclusive Food Pty will help the company to increase the satisfaction level of the employees and thereby decrease the turnover rate. The productivity of the employees can be increased with the introduction of the new remuneration plan. However, the organisational policies and the implementation impact needs to be looked over for the success of the plan. References Hendry, C., 2012.Human resource management. Routledge. Persona doesn’t have an honest relationship Essay Example

Persona doesn’t have an honest relationship Essay ‘Quickdraw’ by Carol Ann Duffy and ‘Sonnet 116’ by William Shakespeare are both very different poems but are linked by one common theme, that of a relationship between two people, although saying this the two poems are distinctly individual and are not linked in any other obvious ways. The two differ from each other as they are written with opposite concepts, ‘Quickdraw’ based around a failing relationship with the persona mentioning fatal flaws and in ‘Sonnet 116’ Shakespeare attempts to define love, by telling both what it is and how much it means to him.The main contrast between the poems technically is the rhyme scheme, one having a rhyme scheme and the other not. ‘Sonnet 116’ is written in the form of a traditional sonnet, meaning that the poem is fourteen lines long and is divided into three quatrains and a concluding section, a rhyming couplet. Each quatrain has an alternating rhyme scheme: ‘a,b,a,b’, ‘c,d,c,d’, and ‘e,f,e,f’. The final rhyming couplet has the rhyme scheme: ‘g,g’ and is also in iambic pentameter. I think the poet; William Shakespeare used this rhyme scheme to make the poem more uplifting and giving it a melodic tone when being read aloud where as in direct contrast ‘Quickdraw’ has a lack of rhyme scheme but does have a more unusual structure, the poem consists of multiple run on lines and two lines of the poem are placed more central to the page. Duffy may have done this to show how the persona is struggling or to create a sense of how unsure and unreliable the situation the narrator is in stands. The tones of the poems seem to contrast but when looked at further the reader is able to realise that it is not only ‘Sonnet 116’ that has a provocative manner. Although repeated references to the West make the poem appear light in tone, ‘Quickdraw’ shows the speaker’s vulnerability as she clearly suffers at the hands of her lover and appears to come off the worse after the showdown. Duffy may have used this deceiving technique to show how a relationship has many depths and when in an argument you cannot always realise the gravity of the situation at hand. In a way this means that in dissimilarity to Shakespeare’s sonnet, which shows the poets wisdom, ‘Quickdraw’ takes more unsure approach to the way a relationship is looked at.The use of the extended metaphor of the West in ‘Quickdraw’ may have been used by the poet to show how, just like in a Western style movie, the speaker’s relationship/ argument is built up to and the next move is unknown. Duffy also uses several words related to movement; such a ‘swirl’, ‘reel’ and ‘fumble’ to make the reader feel the unbalanced nature of the relationship. It also links the modern day need for mobile phones with the need Western cowboys had for a gun and also shows that the narrator’s lover is using it as a weapon in order to emotionally hurt the persona.Duffy’s poem is written as an anecdote, telling the story of the speaker’s argument with her partner. This enables the reader to relate to the situation easier and, unlike Shakespeare’s sonnet, the poem is less demanding in order to be understand. This may also be due to the diction that is used in each poem, due to the time period in which it was written in ‘Sonnet 116’ is harder for modernised readers to completely understand meaning ‘Quickdraw’ takes the upper hand. One of the main features of ‘Sonnet 116’ is the repetition; Shakespeare probably used this repetition to create rhythm. As previously mentioned the poem has a tuneful pattern to it and this could be a contributing factor. During ‘Quickdraw’ Duffy uses alliteration to create a sense of rhythm and also to reach the climax of a line. Duffy also uses repetition, but unlike Shakespeare, it is only truly used at the end of the poem. I believe this adds closure and also shows that the argument the narrator is having with her partner is not actually over.In conclusion I think these two poems are particularly different but due to the common theme can easily be compared against one another to show the poets’ different views on relationships.

How language can be used or abused in persuasion

How language can be used or abused in persuasion Introduction This summary focuses on how language can be used or abused in persuasion. To achieve this task, three different articles from the unit covered are analyzed. These articles are How to Detect Propaganda by The Institute for Propaganda Analysis, Selection, Slanting, Charged Language by Birk and Genevieve, and Doubts about Doublespeak by William Lutz.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on How language can be used or abused in persuasion specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Through this analysis, the techniques used by authors and speakers to control the effects of the message they are delivering, the pros and cons of these kinds of techniques, and the meaning of these messages for the listener or reader are illustrated. How to detect propaganda In this article, several techniques of how language can be used or abused in persuasion through propaganda have been highlighted (â€Å"The Institute for Propaganda Analysisà ¢â‚¬ 1). The author analyses seven common techniques used by individuals to bend the truth and minds of other individuals for political reasons. The techniques identified by the author are name calling approach, glittering general approach, testimonial approach, plain folk’s approach, card-stacking approach, and the bandwagon approach. I believe that listeners can be able to differentiate between propaganda and facts from authors or speakers’ words if they can recognize these techniques. Using these techniques, authors and speakers manage to control the effects of the message they are delivering. Through name calling techniques, listeners or readers can come up with judgments on the messages delivered to them without examining the evidence behind them. With the use of the technique, a propagandist can appeal to the listeners or readers’ hatred and fright (â€Å"The Institute for Propaganda Analysis† 2). This is achieved by branding horrible names on tho se individuals, ethnic communities, religions, or races the propagandist wishes us to condemn. This technique can fuel animosity between individuals, ethnic communities, nationalities, and races. As such, rogue politicians and warlords use this technique to trigger animosity between different communities. Another technique highlighted in the article is glittering generalities (â€Å"The Institute for Propaganda Analysis†3). Through this technique, the propagandist classifies his or her program with the use of virtue words. By doing so, he or she captures the audience’s emotions of love, generosity, and goodwill. As such, this technique makes them approve the message delivered to them without analyzing on the evidence. The disadvantage of this technique is that it may cause animosity against communities whenever applied by rogue individuals. For instance, if a certain community is portrayed using the word bad other communities will see evil in it. Through this, animosit y may arise.Advertising Looking for essay on linguistics? Testimonial technique allows the propagandist to make the audience believe in anything. Cigarette makers in their adverts exploit this technique. Plain folks enable the propagandists who are normally the politicians, labor leaders, and businesspersons to win the audience’s trust by imitating their lifestyles. Usually, during election periods politicians emulate their voters’ behaviors and become closer to them than they are usually to win their confidence. Through card stacking technique, the propagandist employs deceptive skills to win readers or listener’s efforts for his or her interests. Lastly, with the aid of the bandwagon technique a propagandist can make the audience follow a specific multitude. This technique was exploited during war times and peacetimes in the past. Currently, it plays a huge role in the marketing industry. I believe that all propaganda is bad since they utilize peoples emotions without their knowledge. Selection, slanting, and charged language In this article, the author emphasizes that authors and speakers should be aware of the words they use in their works because they indicate their personal feelings, values, and attitudes towards their subjects (Birk Genevieve 1). Equally as readers and listeners, we should be watchful to the slight authorities of charged language to avoid being vulnerable to these authors and speakers. In this article, Birk asserts that authors and speakers should understand the basic principles of selection, slanting, and charged language used to control the effects of the message they are delivering. Concerning selection, Birk asserts that what we expressed eithe r in words or in writings is influenced by the principle of selection. This implies that as we observe, the doctrine of selection decides what we internalize. Similarly, these processes determine what readers or audience will remember in the days to come. Therefore, speakers should understand their audience if they wish to control the effects of the message they are delivering, as the messages taken from one audience to another vary and may cause confusions. The second process of selection mentioned by Birk is slanting. Birk asserts that after the selection process is done in our brains, slanting process may be commenced. According to the author, slanting is defined as the course of choosing facts, words, and accent to accomplish the objective of the communicator (Birk Genevieve 3).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on How language can be used or abused in persuasion specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In the final part of this article, the author focuses on slanting and charged language (Birk Genevieve 5). He describes charged language as the verbal communication used when slanting of facts, words, or emphasis affects a decision concerning a subject. This technique is often used when one wants to express inner knowledge, feelings, or attitudes. According to Birk, the disadvantages associated with this approach are evidenced in dishonest propaganda published in some editorials or magazines often by politicians and effusive salespersons (Birk Genevieve 5). Birk suggests that despite its disadvantages, we should find a way of living with charged language because it shapes our attitudes and values. Equally, it gives direction to our actions. By so doing, we manage to set up and uphold our relations with other individuals. This implies that in the absence of charged language, life would be different and hectic (Birk Genevieve 5). Doubts about doublespeak The article asserts that doublespeak is a verba l communication, which act as if converses but does not (Lutz 1). As such, it is a verbal communication that makes good seem bad and right seem left. This implies that doublespeak denies responsibility. In the article, Lutz highlights four techniques of doublespeak. These techniques can be employed by an author or speaker to change the meaning of the message he or she is delivering. Through euphemism authors or speakers uses specific words and phrases in their speeches and writings to avoid the use of offensive words or reality. Through this technique, an author or speaker can mislead the targeted audience or readers. It should be noted that these specific words become euphemism when they are used with the sole intention of deceiving or misleading. The advantages of these techniques are that it allows the speakers or authors to avoid embarrassing situations or mentioning offensive words, which might attract heated debates. The disadvantage of this technique is that its usage often l eads to confusion among the listeners or readers. Another technique mention by Lutz is jargon. Jargon is a language used by professionals among themselves (Lutz 3). The advantage of jargon is that it allows members of similar professionals to communicate with each other clearly, efficiently and secretly. Another advantage associated with this technique is that it gives their users a sense of belonging to their professions.Advertising Looking for essay on linguistics? Let's see if we can help you! A major disadvantage of this technique is that it makes non-users to feel rejected in a group. Similarly, many individuals perceive those using jargons to be having concealed schemes. The third technique mention by Lutz in the article is gobbledygook. This method is achieved by overwhelming the audience with words that they can hardly comprehend. This technique is usually used in written materials. Gobbledygook words or phrases are usually overused that they have become uninteresting. However, for authors or speakers with the aim of confusing their audience or writers, gobbledygook will come in handy. The fourth technique mentioned by Lutz in the article is inflated language (Lutz 4). This technique is normally used so that things may seem different from the way they are in the minds of the listeners or readers. These words are often used to impress the listeners and the readers into thinking that the author or the speaker is more educated than he is or she seems. However, when overused they lead to confusion among the readers or listeners. Birk, Newman, and Genevieve Birk. Selection, Slanting, Charged Language. mattskillen.com. Version 1. N.p., 8 Nov. 2012.
